kraft ymca

The Kraft YMCA is located on a 34 acre site near the town of Cary. It was conceived as a camp with 7 buildings that compliment one another, giving visual unity to the complex. The main building is approximately 62,000 square feet of space housing a gymnasium, an indoor pool, aerobic and cycling spaces, a children’s daycare, locker rooms, several multi-purpose rooms and a second floor running track that extends around the gymnasium, across bridges and around the wellness center. The running track, wellness center and aerobic studios take visual advantage of the woods located behind the building. The entire second floor roof is exposed to view, creating a large open space punctuated with several smaller volumes housing offices. The building was designed for phasing with the goal of creating a design that looks complete as well as aesthetically pleasing during all phases. Future expansion was planned from the beginning of the project. Currently a multipurpose/mini-gym wing is under construction. The only remaining phase for the main building is the construction of an indoor swimming pool. This project was completed while Dan Huffman, AIA was a principal at Cherry Huffman Architects (now RATIO Architects).
